Plans to Open the Junk Factory to other Merchants!

Well I've got this big huge space and I've got all these extra prims...

I'm going to be moving some things around, and turning the place into a veritable complex of Steampunkery! And for the first time I'm going to welcome other Merchants of the various Punk and Mix/Mashed Punk Persuasions into my store! Things are gonna be shoved aside and I'm going to make premium room for everyone!

Wait...but I just got an invite to a store the other day, then they asked me to pony up the X00L a month for a shop...No worries! It's not a marketing scam, it's not a flagrant sham! I'll be offering space for free, as much as I can reasonably accomodate. I'll be happy to host space for some magic boxes as well but please, please, please, please, please if you have your own little piece of land keep your magic boxes there.

All I'll ask in return, is if you make a windfall or even a mini-windfall, that you perhaps donate a small portion to my operating costs. But I won't hold you to it. Split-proceed vendors are not necessary but if you feel the desire to donate a few shillings to my virtual pot any amount will be welcomed and accepted graciously.

I'll also be expanding by offering tutorials and new Steamy themed resident starter kits.

So stay tuned, this will be happening very soon.

More Junk Ahead!

Sorry I've been in and out sporadically lately. I've been busy moving into my new house. It was a real pain (in my back) too!

Anyway, new Junk is on its way! New Free Junk too! And god-willing if I get the time, I'll finally finish making product pictures for some of my products that don't have them and finish cleaning up my inventory. I would desperately love to dump everything that I don't actively use or have sorted but I just wonder...maybe there will be some awesome suit or something in there that can't be found in world anymore...

I've been around since 2004 so I've got a fairly big inventory currently at about 15-20k (down from 50k the last time I cleaned it)

If anyone needs stuff btw, feel free to ask me. Its likely I'll have something you can use in full or copy/trans perms at least.

And remember this is a community group! If anyone would like to write news or articles for the blog just let me know and I'll set you up.

If anyone is interested in expanding their group roles to Steamgineer, Steamthusiast, or to any of the other roles we have available (giving that you meet the simple requirements for the role) then let me know!

We've got some great SL'ers involved in this group, putting out product notices, giving away free stuff, posting events, and generally learning the building/scripting craft. Kudos to all!

When I set out to make my own group my first thought was a product/update group for my own creations. Then I thought to myself, What's the point? There are thousands of product groups in SL. With the 25 group maximum I can't even keep up with all the groups I want to. Plus I wanted a group that I would be interested in, something that others could be just as much a part of as I, and that even if I wasn't around all the time it wouldn't matter. Sure enough I see this group becoming just that.

All Steamgineers (steampunk/victorian) merchants/creators I urge you not to be shy, post event notices, product notices, free stuff, etc. I only ask you be reasonable with the frequency of your product notices. Free Stuff and Steampunk/Victorian related events? Hit us up!

If you create steampunk/Vict. items you're probably eligble for a Steamgineer tag, so let myself if I'm around or Ulysses Cabaret know, we'll take a look at your creations and give you a tag!
To be eligible you should be have a either/and/or in-world or on SLX or OnRez, your items should be original and should steampunk/Victorian in nature. Mixed punk like cyber-steam or others are fine too.

More Free Junk

The official SteamJunk Free Junk Week is over but that won't mean an end to the free junk! I will continue to release new free and cheap junk, available on SLX, OnRez, and inworld.

The collection will only be available on SLX at the moment but will soon be in OnRez and inworld as well. Here's the whole set:

1 of 8: Brass Ornithopter Wings
2 of 8: Brassy the BrassBot
3 of 8: JunkSub
4 of 8: Cog Furniture Set
5 of 8: Junket Launcher
6 of 8: JunkShack
7 of 8: JunkYard (released today)
8 of 8: JunkBot Galzer (early release today)

You can find all this great free junk on SLX by Clicking Here. (You'll be glad you did)

I've really enjoyed putting this together, coming up with brand new ideas, bringing them to life, and doing it all with very little time! My building methods are simple and my builds are simple (in my opinion) but, I think you'll all agree what really makes this junk great is its character!
Expect a lot more fun stuff for the future from SteamJunk!

Also great news, I just got a pretty nice 2288sqm lot (rented on Mainland) for an insanely good price which will be the site of the new SteamJunk: Junk Factory. I'm surrounded by ugliness of course but, I'll at least be doing my part to beautify and steamify the area. If anyone can beat 2200L a month for a similar sized lot (more or less) please let me know! The JunkFactory is under construction at the moment but, I'll let you all know when the doors are open.

Free Junk Week on SLeXchange!

Perhaps it sounds tacky but I don't like to beat around the bush. All week and everyday I will be posting a new (open source when applicable) item on SLX (www.slexchange.com) for free!

If you don't know SLX is the premiere online marketplace for SL shopping. OnRez (http://shop.onrez.com) is also an alternate. They are both free to join and even post your own
products for sale! You can find lots of great stuff on SLX and OnRez even if you're broke so check them out!

So be sure and check out my SLX store! I heartily encourage fellow steamers and merchants to join me in showing the SL community that quality does not have to equal 1000L!

Sunday's Release:
Brass Ornithopter Wings (with open source flight assist)

Monday's Release:
Brassy the BrassBot (Avatar)

Cheers!

Welcome to The Grid Steamer!

Welcome fellow Steampunks to The Grid Steamer! We will be showcasing new products, places, news and events related to the Steampunk and Victorian lifestyle within Second Life.

For those who may have stumbled upon this blog
Steampunk is a term used to describe what some have called 'What if the future had happened in the past?' Victorian era style & technology (we love anything steam-powered!) mixed with modern technology and a spot of magic.

Second Life is a 3D Virtual Online World in which anything you imagine can come to life (at least on your computer screen) Also if you can imagine a lot of guys pretending to be female escorts working for an equivalent of $2USD an hour on average, then you're well on your way!

At any rate, I actually wanted to name this blog after our group 'SteamJunk'. Imagine my chagrin when I found out I had waited too long to sign up for a blogspot page. Apparently, someone else also had the insane idea to replace the 'P' in Steampunk with a 'J' and it's another SL resident to boot!

Well, I'm not mad. The SteamJunk blog (http://steamjunk.blogspot.com) is actually pretty well put together and if you get a chance give it a look. It's also got some great links to other Steampunk resources on the net such as Brass Goggles (http://www.brassgoggles.co.uk/brassgoggles/) which some of you may already be familiar with.

This blog like our group 'SteamJunk' will be a community blog so I will be inviting fellow bloggers and creators to join me in contributing their own material to The Grid Steamer, as a 'shared' blog very soon.

If you haven't joined the 'SteamJunk' group yet and you're an SL Resident who considers themselves a SteamFan or at least SteamCurious I would highly recommend you devote a group slot to it. What makes SteamJunk different from other groups is we've brought together many top and upcoming Steampunk & Victorian creators and designers from around SL, to share new products, news, events, free stuff and more.

If you're just joining us make sure you check the past group notices because I'm constantly giving away my own original creations and other free junk. Our other Steamgineers are also pitching in from time to time. So, if you click past the notice pop-ups too quick, make sure you go back, read them and click save or open attachment.

We've got a variety of group roles as well. Let me give you a quick run-down.

Every group member gets the SteamPunk group tag. For the following group tags if you feel you qualify for one of these tags IM Tormented Twilight or a SteamJunk officer. When the group gets bigger we'll be looking at dubbing some SteamKnights.

Steamgineers are for creators and merchants of original Steampunk & Victorian products. Steamgineers can post notices on their own new products and are encouraged to give away free stuff or demos at their own discretion.

Steamster/Steamstress are for designers of Steampunk & Victorian clothing. They can post notices on their own new products are are encouraged to give away free stuff or demos at their own discretion.

Steamthusiast is for avid SteamFans who attend Steampunk related events on a regular basis or for those who host actual Steampunk events, so they can inform the group where and when SteamFun is to be had.

SteamScribe is for bloggers and other SteamJournalists so they can post news and links to interesting blogs or web stuff related to Steampunkery.

Everyone who has one of these titles is encouraged to use their notice priveleges but to do it with discretion. We want to hear about new stuff but, we don't need a notice about every red, pink, and polka-dot cog you make.
If you have new products, news, or anything else you're encouraged to combine into one notice or to enclose a notecard. An additional benefit to holding a special title is getting a pair of Steamgineer Goggles I've lovingly hand-crafted and designed. I'll be working on some Spectacles for SteamScribes as well as Monacles for Steamsters & Steamstreses. I'm not currently selling these special creations and only giving them to group members or during special promotions.

Only Steamgineers or Steamsters & Steamstresses should be putting out new product notices and these should be about your own products, at least for the time-being.

If you find a great new SteamMerchant you're encouraged to IM me about them or send them a cordial invitation to our group yourself.

Myself or an officer will be reviewing members who wish to apply for an official tag. We don't aim to be elitist about giving tags out but, I do need to make sure we're not just giving tags out to some guy who learned how to rez a cube and apply a brass texture to it yesterday.

If anyone has a problem with anything or anyone in the group please let me know! I'll take care of it. If you have suggestions to improve the group those are welcome too.

Furthermore, if you have any questions or need help with anything feel free to post a question in groupchat or even IM me personally if you want. I don't mind being bugged. Its better if you do it while I'm online though. I haven't had IMs capped in a while but, who knows I may become popular one of these days.

For the future of SteamJunk I'd like to open a community hangout/store on a 4096 or larger, a place to hangout, learn a little about building and scripting SteamStyle, and also showcasing some great products and freebies from myself and fellow Steamgineers.

I might end up buying or renting my own one place of these days or perhaps going in on a joint venture with a fellow Steamy. Either way I don't expect any land to be deeded to the group as I'd rather avoid any unnecessary hassles. At the moment, I am currently renting a couple small pieces of land, and a little shop in a great sim called 'The Steam Forge' which I recommend all SteamFans visit or revisit.

Alright, well good on ya if you actually read all this! SteamJunk needs some more good Steampunks! So if you know any SteamFans or original merchants send them my way or send them an invite yourself (just do it in a non-spammy way please) I promise my other posts won't be as long! Thanks to everyone so far for joining us!
